Perimenopause Hot Flashes - How To Keep Your Cool During Perimenopause Hot Flashes
Hot flashes can easily be one of the most annoying symptoms of perimenopause. Usually striking when least expected, bringing with it a sudden sensation of extreme heat - especially in the area of the face, neck and chest - profuse perspiration, rapid heart beat, and in some rarer cases, a fainting spell. They are experienced by more than 85% of women, and their frequency and severity can very greatly from woman to woman.
The following are easy, straightforward ways to keep cool as a cucumber when you feel your internal thermometer begin to reach the boiling point:
• Keep a record of your flashes and you may begin to notice a particular pattern begin to take shape. You may find that you have flashes at a particular time of day or evening, or during a particular event such as a high stress situation. Knowing when the chances of flash developing are higher will help you better prepare yourself, and/or help you to avoid certain situations and activities at certain times of the day.
• Consider your clothing choices. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon will trap heat and perspiration. Turtle necks, tight fitting shirts and long sleeves can all intensify the feeling of being suffocated. Loose clothing with rounded or V - necks and short sleeves are recommended.
• Chill out in a variety of ways. Keep a thermos of ice water near by, take a cold shower or place a wet, cool cloth on your forehead or the back of your neck. Keep your rooms well ventilated. If your home does not have air conditioning, closing blinds and curtains during the day will help to keep the heat of the sun out.
• Smoking affects circulation and intensifies hot flashes. Kick the habit.
• Chocolate, coffee, tea, alcohol, sugary, spicy and salty dishes can all trigger a hot flash. Hot soups and large meals can do the same. Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruit have a slight estrogenic effect that will help ward off flashes.
